The Scientific Information Centre and Academic Library provides access to specialised equipment for comfortable work and offers assistance of professionally trained librarians. Architectural facilities in the building

  • automatically opening doors,
  • elevator cab adapted for people on wheelchairs and blind/visually impaired
  • toilets for people with physical disabilities
  • corridors and rooms adapted for moving on wheelchairs,
  • non slip flooring
  • appropriate lighting and contrasting interior colours for easy mobility of the visually impaired,
  • places specially prepared for disabled readers and employees.

Specialist equipment for blind and visually impaired

Workplace with the equipment dedicated to the visually impaired is located in the individual study Carrel on the first level, next to the Multimedia reading room and the Computer Lab. It is equipped with the following hardware and software:

  • auto-reader (model Harpo, Epson Perfection V10)
  • Braille keyboard (model Alva BC 640),
  • large print PC keyboard,
  • Braille printer (model Everest D V4),
  • Super Nova Reader screen-reader and ZoomText (so called “loupe”) installed on the computer.

Help for the hearing impaired

Deaf people can ask for help from Library staff who speak basic sign language:

Providing readers with digital copies of library materials

Students of the University of Silesia have a possibility to order in the library a service of preparing digital copies of library materials. We scan at the request, inter alia, articles from journals and selected chapters from books - for personal use. In order to obtain digital copies of materials collected by the library, please contact the Office of Disability Affairs at the University of Silesia.

Digital Library of the University of Silesia

Digital Library of the University of Silesia contains digitized versions of more than 10 thousand contemporary works, including manuals, dictionaries, encyclopedias, literary texts, journals from all fields of knowledge. Due to copyright restrictions publications are available only on the computers within the library network of the University of Silesia.
In order to obtain digital copies of materials collected by the library, please contact the Office of Disability Affairs at the University of Silesia.
